This study investigates the role of institutional quality in fostering economic performance in Nigeria using time series data spanning from 1980 - 2025. The expost facto research design was adopted and the data used were sourced from the World Bank Development Indicator database and the Worldwide Governance indicators. The data were analysed using Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL) bounds cointegration approach. The long-run result shows that institutional quality has a negative impact on economic performance in Nigeria for the period under review. The estimated model passed all the diagnostic tests including structural stability. The study recommends that the government should ensure fiscal discipline to reduce corruption and also adopt the policy of checks and balances to ensure good governance. Those found guilty of any offence especially public office holders should face the wrath of the law. Government should provide an enabling environment for budgetary allocation to be spent on the intended project for which it is actually made.
