This study examines the role of Nigerian mainstream media as the Fourth Estate of the Realm, assessing whether the press functions effectively as a watchdog or is compromised by political, economic, and structural pressures. Specifically, the study sought to: (i) examine how ownership structures influence editorial independence; (ii) assess the impact of commercial pressures on journalistic standards; and (iii) evaluate the role of investigative journalism in sustaining democratic accountability. Drawing on a purposive sample of 38 peer-reviewed journal articles, 5 institutional reports, and 3 press-freedom indices published between 2016 and 2026, the study employed thematic content analysis to identify five key themes: ownership structure and political influence, and economic pressures, professional ethics and journalistic standards, investigative journalism, and digital media challenges. Findings indicate that concentrated ownership, political affiliations, and reliance on advertising revenue often compromise editorial independence and ethical standards, limiting the media’s capacity to hold power accountable. Nonetheless, professional ethics, capacity-building, and investigative journalism emerge as critical mechanisms for enhancing accountability and public trust. The study recommends transparency in ownership, strengthened ethical frameworks, legal protections, institutional support for investigative reporting, and responsible use of digital media to empower Nigerian media to fulfil their democratic mandate effectively.
