Abstract

This study examined the political and religious implications of a Muslim–Muslim ticket in democratic Nigeria. Specifically, it sought to unearth how same-faith political candidacy affects public perception, on political and interfaith harmony, national unity, and peace building. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, Data was collected from 210 respondents across the Northeast states in Nigeria, using structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using mean scores, standard deviations, and hypothesis testing to determine significant implications. Findings revealed that while politically, it was largely perceived as insignificant, religious implications were significant, with respondents increased suspicion between Christian and Muslim leaders, reinforced perceptions of religion used as a political instrument, and heightened interfaith sensitivities. The study concluded that although Muslim–Muslim tickets is constitutionally silent, this carries significant religious consequences that influence interfaith relations and perceptions of more political legitimacy. Recommendations included promoting inclusive governance, fostering interfaith dialogue, and emphasizing issue-based politics to mitigate potential religious tensions.
